How To Have a Zero Waste Bathroom*

The bathroom can be one of the more wasteful rooms in our homes.

Traditionally toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, shampoo, shower gel, and more tend to come in single-use plastic containers but with a bit of research I have found there are many reusable or compostable alternatives which can help live a more sustainable life. This is what I use to try and minimise wasteful packaging where I can:

Use A Bamboo Toothbrush and Lose Traditional Dental Floss

The average person will use approximately 300 toothbrushes over the course of their lifetime - approximately 5.5 kg of plastic waste. Switching to a bamboo toothbrush is a decision I made over 3 years ago and I’ve never looked back.

Just make sure you pluck your bristles (or snap the head) before decomposing the handle as the bristles are not biodegradable.
Traditional dental floss is made from nylon and won’t naturally degrade so looking for options that will decompose is a great choice. Georganics natural Dental Floss is made from compostable Corn-base PLA, coated with Vegetable Wax and organic Spearmint Oil. Alternatively water flossers do an incredible job and although they’re a larger upfront investment the environment will thank you.

Conscious Skincare

Codex Skincare is not only good, but it does so much good also for the environment. Codex Beauty sustainably wild harvest and source organic ingredients and look to biotechnology and up-cycled materials for the rest. Their skincare is packaged in tubes made from renewable sugar cane that have a negative carbon footprint and are easily recyclable. Most importantly the range is concise and effective. On days when I’m wearing a bit more make up than usual I’m always amazed how well the cleansing oil removes it whilst being so gentle too. Their soaps are fantastic, completely zero waste, hero products in my routine too. I have one by my sink and one in the shower also.

Reusable Menstrual Cups

On average you will use 11,000 sanitary products in your lifetime and not only do the enviromental costs add up so to does money spent on products. Mooncup.co.uk has a great calculator showing how much you can save over a lifetime by using one of there products.

Reusable menstural cups are healthier for the environment as well as being so much more convenient and cost effective. For more reasons see >here<

Bamboo Cotton buds and Reusable Pads

Plastic cotton buds are so detrimental to marine life and cannot be recycled.

Bamboo cotton buds are biodegradable and just as effective. Disposable make up remover cotton pads come wrapped in plastic and make up wipes often don’t degrade so switching to reusable pads is a brilliant swop to make. I rinse them after use and throw them in with my weekly white’s wash and they’re good as new.

P.S little fun fact - Bamboo is the fastest growing plant and in some cases, it can grow 3 feet tall in 24 hours. You can literally watch it grow with your own eyes!

Safety Razors

Apparently 2 billion razor blades end up in landfill every year (Source)

Switching your disposable plastic razor for a reusable one or opting for options such as waxing or lasering can have a huge positive impact on the environment.

With razors the blades are made from stainless steel and can be recycled and with proper care and maintenance, the razor handle itself can last you a lifetime.
